Johnnie Walker has released "Ode to Lesvos," a documentary about the European migration crisis directed by Sundance Film Festival-winning director Talal Derki, as part of the brand's "Storyline" production initative.
Derki -- himself a Syrian exile who was honored at Sundance for his documentary on the war in his homeland, "Return to Homs," -- traveled to the Greek island of Lesvos to interview residents who have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to help some of the half a million refugees who arrived at their island in 2015 after crossing the sea from Turkey.
The result is a moving tale of ordinary islanders who went out of their way to welcome those who had nothing, despite not being rich themselves.
As part of the launch of "Ode to Lesvos," Johnnie Walker is supporting Mercy Corps, a leading global organization that helps people around the world survive and thrive after conflict, crisis and natural disaster.
"Storyline" was created by Johnnie Walker to "give everyday people a voice to tell inspiring stories of positivity and progress." The brand is working with directors, filmmakers, writers and photographers worldwide. Previous films in the series have been made by Virtue, the in-house creative agency of Vice Media. For "Ode to Lesvos," Derki made the film in partnership with Johnnie Walker creative agency, Anomaly.
